When and how did you discover you wanted to be a writer/author?
When I was growing up I used to write poems and share them to friends or just jot them, then throw away. I discovered I wanted to write in 2004 when I left my job due to health problems.

Please tell about your first publication – what was it, when, how you felt when it happened, problems you may have had, etc.
My, first publication was my book of poems titled ‘Emotional Feelings,’ with Red Lead Books. I was so happy, but there was not enough publicity for it. It was up to me to do it. It’s not easy.

Please tell about the most memorable moments in your writing career.
There are a lot. One is writing children’s books with my drawings in each book. I want all of my books to put smiles on everyone’s face. It warms my heart.

Have you won any awards?
For me, the biggest award I could receive is the warm feelings I get when I see a big smile on a child’s face.

Have you been on a ‘best seller’ list? 
No.  This is because I am not well-known! I advertise a lot on Facebook and Twitter. I also do press releases. I am working at it but it’s hard work and slow going.

What problems have you encountered in your career and how did you deal with them?
I hit brick walls with my writing,  and sometimes want to quit. But, I keep going anyway. Nick, my husband, has been by my side all the way, and gives me courage. How I love him for that, and so much more.

What genre do you most often write?  Children’s Books Fiction

What other genres have you written?  Non-Fiction

What would you tell an aspiring writer who asks you for assistance?
I’d tell them I’d love to help them, or provide names of authors who can.

What advice would you give to all up-and-coming writers?

Please tell about your other activities.
Besides my writing, I spend time on Facebook, play pool, workout, and swim. I’m always looking for a place where I can read to children.

What is the name of your current project?
My current project is a book titled “Trapped in a Dream,” based on the true story of Boston Blacky.

What is the release date?
My target date is Oct 17 2012. It’s a birthday surprise for my husband, Nick, since it’s about him.

I am doing a Book Presentation for the residents of the complex where I live.

Is this work a stand-alone or part of a series?  Stand-alone

Do you have any project(s) planned for the future?  Yes

Please provide some details of the project(s).
I’d like to do more books in ‘Jonick the Alien’ series. Then, perhaps a novel.

What would I like to see happen in my career as a writer?
I am a writer just trying to get things out to the public. Whether it would be, a smile on a child’s’ face or things to help you see what is happening in our world or had happened.

I became a scientist – ‘timetables’ at that time couldn’t accommodate English & Science so my future became binary.

At age 52 – when I re-married. Love re-emerged!

It’s amazing after seven years of work to see a collection of poems that can generate such feeling! They’ll  have a lump in your throat within ten minutes.

Please tell about the most memorable moment in your career.
When I realized that I could write an intense poem catching my love for a son who has Down’s Syndrome!

I’ve won prizes in several of poetry competitions.

Shakespeare and Emily Dickinson

Modern Poets. I love Philip Levine & Simon Armitage!

I would gladly mentor

What would you tell an aspiring writer who asks you for assistance?
Write a lot about what is happening right now! The present moment is nascent.

What advice would you give to all up-and-coming writers?
Study great poetry.  Study their techniques.

I run personal development groups with a ‘spiritual’ twist.

I can’t remember not wanting to write.  I learned to read before I started school and the idea of writing wasn’t far behind.

  • ‘Walk-A-Thons: How Amateur Radio Can Help’ was a request from World Radio News for anyone in the radio club to write, so it wasn’t an ‘official’ freelance job.
  • ‘Janelle’s Time’ was my first novel.  The process was a 10-year long roller coaster ride – very stressful.

Please tell about the most memorable moments in your career.
The most memorable moment was getting the email offering me a publishing contract for ‘Janelle’s Time.’  I was rendered speechless, as my husband will tell you.

The second most memorable moment was when World Radio News published my article word-for-word.

What genre do you most often write? Romance

Which authors most influenced your writing career?
Bertrice Small, Lynn Kurland, (early) Karen Marie Moning, Jean Auel, Diana Gabaldon, and others.  Special mention to Stephen King for his book ‘On Writing, A Memoir of the Craft.’

What would you tell an aspiring writer who asks you for assistance?
WRITE! WRITE!  WRITE!
Work on your WIP every day, even if it’s just a page or two.
LEARN!  LEARN!  LEARN!
Never stop learning.  Take courses, attend conferences, follow people on Twitter who post great articles (bookmark and/or print them). Your brain will thank you!

What advice would you give to all up-and-coming writers?
Never give up.  When one door closes, another opens that may be better.
Write every day, practice your craft. Learn about the industry – all of it!

‘Moria’s Time’ – book 2 of my TIME series

I’m targeting an early 2013 release
