In 1997, I began my teaching career. It was not an easy transition. I was teaching a multitude of subjects to a motley assortment of angry, often violent, over-age middle school students. In some twisted way, Flesh Eaters emerged from me as a means of cathartic response to that experience.
Flesh Eaters is extremely dark, and readers tend to have a strong emotional reaction to it. I know that the ending, in particular, tends to upset them.
But, since writing Flesh Eaters in 1998, I have resisted the temptation to revise it. If I were to rewrite it now, it would undoubtedly be a different story. However, it has become a historical document in my personal timeline; it stands as an authentic record of who I was then as both a writer and a person.
